Always a popular spot.
On a nice day Pauanui is breathtaking. A fabulous golden sand beach to the east, large hills to the west and a real aviation feel with aeroplanes parked out front of the houses lining the runway edges.
Best time of year to go | Anytime |
Food on the Airport | Almost. About 150m walk to a small group of shops with cafe's and a bakery. |
Fuel available | No. Plan accordingly. NZWT and NZTH close by with fuel. |
Landing Fees | Yes. Best paid in honesty box on arrival for best rate. |
Comments on arriving & Departing |
As noted on the chart, due to terrain there is a lot of potential for windshear on arrival and departure. Prk on the south side of the field, best 3/4 towards west at the clubhouse if there for food. |
Things to do nearby | Swimming from the fabulous beach. Some nice walks. Golf. |
Be alert for windshear on approach and departure.
Park along the southern side about 1/3 from the Western end. There you will see the club house where you can pay your landing fee. a short walk from there (out and to your right) is a small group of shops. There are a few options for food and coffee.
We tried "the Chocolate Pretzel".
They tried hard. It didn't exactly run on rails but I'm sure it has better days. Worth a visit at least. The menu seems interesting even if a little under supported.
I bought Eggs Folentine with grilled holumi which was quite tasty.
The coffee, soy lattés as usual, was quite passable for a small town.
I would certainly come back.
I may check out one of the others next time.
Of course with the beach so nearby, there is some great swimming to be had or even just a nice walk along the beach and back alond the walking paths through the houses.
A lovely place to visit.
